Managing Myopia in Children

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a common vision problem that affects up to 30% of Americans. The effects of this refractive error make it very difficult to focus on far-away objects. Though there is no outright cure for myopia, recent studies have suggested that there are ways to slow its progression in developing eyes.

The Eye Care Team is committed to helping your child see better with treatments that can limit the severity of their myopia. Early diagnosis is your best bet for stabilizing your child’s vision, so schedule a children’s eye exam to begin the myopia control process.

Understanding Myopia

Myopia (or nearsightedness) causes light to focus in front of the retina rather than directly on the retina. It occurs when the cornea’s shape is too steep or the eye is too long.

Myopia is an increasingly common condition in school-aged children. The reasons for this are not completely known, but experts do link more near-work activity (staring at close things, like a smartphone) with myopia progression. Making sure your child has the right prescription with a comprehensive eye exam can help defend against this problem.

Taking Control of Myopia

Myopia usually accelerates during the teenage years, but it doesn’t always worsen if preventative steps are taken. An early diagnosis allows our doctors to identify changes in your child’s eyes and recommend treatments before the correction becomes more extreme. A few products are leading the way for myopia control.

Wearing eyeglasses with the right lenses can curb the effect myopia has on vision. The optical industry has been developing specialty lenses in recent years that help correct errors associated with nearsightedness. Ask our eyewear experts about lens options that can help your child’s vision stabilize.
