Laser eye surgery has come a long way since its inception in the late 1980s. Today, LASIK surgery is undergone by millions of Americans every single year, and the success rates are through the roof with over 95% of patients being satisfied with the results.
Since laser eye surgery can now correct almost every refractive error for which glasses are usually required, it is more popular and available than ever before. To see if you are a valid candidate for a procedure, and to find out which treatment method would best suit your personal needs, call The Eye Care Team today and arrange for a laser eye surgery consultation. It’s the first step towards regaining your lenses-free vision!
A high precision laser makes a small flap in your corneal (outer eye) tissue. Your corneal cells are then subject to short bursts of laser treatment, which corrects your refractive error. The flap is closed and surgery is over.
Rather than making a small flap, the front layer of the cornea (the epithelium) is removed entirely. For LASEK, the tissue is put back in place at the end of surgery. With the PRK procedure, it is not replaced but the body grows a new epithelial lining within a matter of days.
If you are given the all-clear following your personal consultation, then we will schedule you an appointment and get the ball rolling.
The very first thing we need to do is conduct a comprehensive eye exam to assess your overall eye health and whether or not you are a suitable candidate for laser treatment. If you have particularly thin corneas, for example, LASIK may not be an option, but LASEK or PRK could be.
Taking care of your eyes after surgery is an essential part of the whole process, and we’ll be there every step of the way. We will perform evaluations of your vision, recovery and overall eye health. Should you require any extra aids (such as reading glasses, or perhaps repeat laser treatment) then we will advise you on the best way to proceed.
Recovery is usually quite quick and without complication, however there are potential side effects (as with any surgical procedure) of which you must remain aware:
