Things have come a long way since modern contact lenses were first implemented in the 1970’s. Today, contacts can be used to correct all of the refractive errors for which we normally wear glasses, with the extra benefit of being exceptionally subtle and comfortable, to the point that you can’t actually notice them!
Contact lenses should only be worn after a proper exam and fitting. This way you can get lenses which exactly fit your eye, as well as optimizing the correction of your vision. The better the fit, the more comfortable the lenses will be!
We offer both the contact lens exam and fitting here at the Eye Care Team in Spokane.
We will start by conducting a comprehensive exam on your eye. Here our optometrists will evaluate how well you are seeing (through various tests) and therefore how much correction is required in each eye. The exam will also look for tell-tale signs of any developing eye disease and generally assess your eye health. You should be having an eye exam every 12-24 months anyway, so this is a convenient way to get that done!
The second thing we’ll do is train you in inserting and removing your lenses – and we don’t expect you to get it right the first time! Then we’ll send you away with a trial pair, to check how they feel for a few days. That’s all there is to it!
Once you get used to adding and removing them from your eyes every day, lenses offer a convenience and practicality which glasses can never match. Many people find that their lifestyle demands contact lenses, especially those who work outdoors or those who compete in competitive sports.
Certain individuals may not be valid candidates for contact lenses. For everyone else, contact lenses offer virtually no disadvantages compared to glasses. If it’s more about fashion – we understand glasses can look great – then you can even wear non-prescription glasses to complete your look if you want to.
Many lenses are daily disposables, which means they are designed to last a single day. Other replacement schedules, including weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly contacts are options as well. We will determine the best replacement schedule for your lifestyle.
Nowadays there are contact lenses designed to treat virtually all refractive errors, and far too many to mention succinctly right here. Following your exam with one of our expert optometrists, they will provide you with all relevant information about the options which are available to you personally. From there, you can make your own decision and leave with the perfect lenses for your eyes!
